Save the Galgo

I donate a portion of my profits to help the plight of the galgos in Spain (Read below if you’re interested in learning more about the horrific abuse of these animals). I have sponsored a galgo named More, from SOS Galgos, a rescue in Barcelona, that works tirelessly to not only rescue discarded galgos, but also to build awareness through public programs, and to participate in initiatives aimed at changing policy towards these animals in Spain.

Every photo session with me helps a galgo!

So what’s happening to the Galgos in Spain?

The galgo, basically a Spanish greyhound, is one of the first dogs ever domesticated by man. They were so powerful, beautiful and fast, that they were considered extremely valuable - so valuable that only nobility owned them and the punishment for stealing a galgo was death. Ironically, today, no dog on earth is more abused, abandoned or killed than the galgo.

They’re fast hunters and overly bred for the “hare coursing” season, in which hunters release galgos to chase down hares in competitions. The bloodsport has been banned everywhere else in Europe, except Spain. Hunters will breed galgos, choose only the best ones for their hunt, murder the ones not chosen to hunt, and then brutally dispose of their chosen dog when the season is over (just a few short months). Conservative numbers suggest over 50,000 galgos are killed each year. Sadly, because they’re considered “working dogs”, they are not protected by animal cruelty laws.

Please reach out to me if you’re interested in helping! I’ve done some research and can send you information about many different organizations if you’re interested in donating, spreading awareness, or even adopting a galgo (there are multiple US agencies who facilitate the adoption of galgos to US homes).
